Momi Maiga

Momi Maiga stands out as a kora virtuoso, a skilful vocalist and a bold, talented self-taught composer with an exquisite musical sensitivity and a powerful stage presence. Originally from southern Senegal and based in Catalonia since 2019, Momi Maiga grew up sheltered by one of the richest musical traditions of West Africa; his artistic legacy is connected to the Cissokho family and to the ancestral heritage of the griots of the Mandé people and their repertoire.

Momi Maiga’s profile is growing impressively, with full houses at venues as prominent as the Bimhuis (Amsterdam) and the Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg) in the same year that he appeared at the Barcelona Jazz Festival at L'Auditori de Barcelona and was invited to share the stage in Paris with Youssou N'Dour, who has called him “the ambassador of a new generation of the kora”. With his regular appearances in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Portugal and Spain, Momi Maiga is making a name for himself that will undoubtedly keep on growing.

At the end of 2022 he released his debut album, Nio, which led him to give more than seventy concerts with his quartet across much of Central Europe and France. In 2024 he presented his second album, Kairo, with which he continues to captivate through his exquisite voice, always imbued with nuances drawn from the traditional songs of the djelis of West Africa, and his mastery and virtuosity on the twenty-two strings of the kora. The notes of Marçal Ayats’s cello are the backbone of these original compositions, while the subtle sounds of Aleix Tobias’s percussion bring a distinctive sonority. To this is added the skill and sweetness of Carlos Montfort on the violin, who majestically enriches the quartet. The fusion of styles and vibrant emotions are at the core of Momi Maiga’s artistic identity.
