Renaud Garcia-Fons

For more than four decades, RENAUD GARCIA-FONS has been one of the most singular figures on the European music scene, a bridge-builder between the musics of the Mediterranean, with a personal aesthetic that moves naturally between contemporary jazz, early music and roots music.

His musical language stands out for its remarkable richness of timbre, underpinned by a technical mastery that expands the expressive possibilities of his instrument: with astonishing skill, he draws from his five-string double bass registers close to those of the violin, the cello and the lute. This mastery has earned him the nickname “the Paganini of the double bass” throughout Europe.

With more than twenty recordings of his own, he is a pioneer of the fusion of jazz and world music (Oriental Bass, 1997) and has worked with artists such as Paul Simon, Françoise Hardy, Dhafer Youssef, Angélique Ionatos, Bernard Lavilliers, Hamilton de Holanda and Dorantes. With the latter he performed at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in 2024, and with the lutenist and theorbist Claire Antonini he has a long-standing duo that has appeared on many European stages. The career of this Frenchman of Catalan descent has been recognised with, among others, two Echo Jazz awards in Germany (2010 and 2011), the Giraldillo for performance at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla (2010) and the SACEM Grand Prix du Jazz in France (2021). He has recorded for leading labels such as Enja and ACT.
